The archaic style building also known as La Rotonda, is one of Italy’s most significant examples of solemnity Romanesque round churches and is next door to the new and more traditionally built.
While some claims for an earlier construction exist, the earliest writings state the cathedral was built in the 11th century on the site of a previous church. It has a circular shape that became rare after the Council of Trent.
In the 19th century, many additions to the authentic medieval building were discarded.
